Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles have now surpassed clothes moths as the most common textile pest found in the North East of England.

An infestation of carpet beetles often results in distinct round holes, especially along the seams of fabric where the thread has been eaten. The damage is caused by their larvae, known as “woolly bears.” These larvae are about 4mm long, covered in brown hairs, and tend to curl up when disturbed.

Larvae behavior: The larvae are most active in October before they hibernate. They typically feed on materials like feathers, fur, hair, or wool. The life cycle of a carpet beetle takes about a year, and the larvae can survive for months without food.

Adult carpet beetles: Adult carpet beetles are 2-4mm long, oval-shaped, and have a mottled brown, grey, and cream coloration. While adults only feed on pollen and nectar, they lay eggs in bird nests, felt, fabrics, or fluff found in buildings. You’ll often spot them in April, May, and June when they are looking for egg-laying sites.

Preparation before PEST-SHIELD treatment:

  • Clear all clutter from floors (toys, books, boxes, DVDs, posters, shoes, etc.).
  • Empty wardrobes, cupboards, and drawers.
  • Vacuum all floors, especially around carpet edges and under furniture.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture, paying attention to debris under cushions.
  • Clean and vacuum the interiors of wardrobes, cupboards, and drawers.
  • Dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside bin after vacuuming.
  • Clean all surfaces thoroughly.
  • Cover all food, cutlery, clothes, towels, and toothbrushes.

Aftercare tips:

  • Allow the treatment spray to dry and avoid cleaning any puddles.
  • Do not touch treated surfaces or allow pets in the area until dry. If insecticide touches your skin, wash it off immediately.
  • Reduce humidity by opening windows and increasing heat to help the treatment work.
  • Avoid vacuuming for two weeks. On the third week, vacuum thoroughly at least once a day, focusing on carpet edges and less-disturbed areas. Dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside bin.
  • Refrain from cleaning surfaces for at least a month.
  • After one month, thoroughly clean all areas, including wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, radiators, skirting boards, and hard-to-reach places.

Ongoing maintenance: It is crucial to continue vacuuming regularly, focusing on carpet edges and undisturbed areas. Small numbers of beetles may still breed under carpets where insecticide may not reach.
