Asian Hornet Control – What You Need to Know

Asian hornets (Vespa velutina) are an invasive species that pose a threat to native pollinators, particularly honeybees. Sightings in the UK have increased in recent years, including confirmed reports in parts of the North East.

Due to their environmental impact, Asian hornets are subject to national monitoring and control procedures. Any suspected sighting must be reported through official channels.

Identification

Asian hornets can be confused with native species, including the European hornet. Key characteristics include:

  • Predominantly dark body

  • Single orange band towards the rear of the abdomen

  • Yellow-tipped legs

  • Around 25 mm in length (smaller than the native European hornet)

They are often seen near flowering plants or around apiaries.

Accurate identification is important, as misidentification is common.

Reporting Procedure

If you believe you have seen an Asian hornet:

  1. Take a clear photograph if it is safe to do so.

  2. Report the sighting using the official Asian Hornet Watch app.

Reports submitted through the app are reviewed by the National Bee Unit and relevant environmental authorities.

This is the correct and official method for reporting suspected sightings in the UK.

Pest Shield’s Role

Asian hornets are managed through national response protocols. We do not independently treat confirmed Asian hornet nests.

Where a suspected sighting is reported to us, we can:

  • Assist with identification

  • Direct you to the correct reporting procedure

  • Liaise with authorities where appropriate

If a reported insect is confirmed as an Asian hornet, we do not charge for associated advisory call-outs.

Why Early Reporting Matters

Asian hornet nests can expand significantly over the course of a season and have the potential to impact local bee populations. Prompt reporting allows authorities to assess and, where necessary, take appropriate action to prevent spread.

Unsure What You’ve Seen?

Many insects are commonly mistaken for Asian hornets. If you are uncertain, contact us and we can advise whether it is likely to be:

  • A European hornet

  • A large wasp species

  • Or another non-target insect

Correct identification prevents unnecessary concern and ensures genuine sightings are handled appropriately.
