The Problem
A customer in Newcastle NE2 contacted us after experiencing ongoing rat activity inside her property. Despite carrying out routine checks herself, the problem persisted and was becoming very distressing. The property had an extension at the rear, and the suspicion was that rodents might be exploiting hidden access points underground.
Rats commonly use drainage systems to gain entry into homes, and even small breaks in underground pipework can create a direct route indoors. These issues are particularly difficult to identify without the right equipment, as they are often concealed beneath extensions or hard landscaping.
Our Inspection
We carried out a full survey of the property, including a CCTV drain inspection using our specialist drain camera. This revealed a break in the waste pipe located beneath the rear extension. The damaged section of pipe provided a direct entry point for rats into the property.
Unfortunately, because the break was underneath the extension, digging to expose and repair the pipe was not feasible at this stage.
Our Solution
As a practical compromise, we installed a stainless steel non-return valve within the drainage system. This device allows waste water to flow out but prevents rats from travelling back up through the damaged pipework.
We explained to the customer that while this would stop the immediate infestation, a full repair to the broken pipe would eventually be required for a permanent solution. This approach gave the customer breathing space to plan and budget for the necessary works without leaving the property vulnerable to further rodent entry.
The Outcome
The non-return valve provided an effective and immediate barrier, stopping rats from entering the property. The customer noticed a complete end to rodent activity indoors and was very relieved to regain peace of mind.
She now has clear evidence of the drainage issue from our CCTV survey, which she can use when arranging future repair works with contractors.
Key Takeaway
This case highlights how drainage defects are a common but often hidden source of rodent infestations. With specialist equipment such as drain cameras and non-return valves, we can both diagnose the problem and provide a practical interim solution. By combining inspection, immediate control, and long-term advice, we ensure customers are fully supported in resolving even the most challenging pest issues.
