Cluster flies may look similar to house flies, but their behaviour is quite different. Unlike house flies, they are sluggish and don’t buzz around. Cluster flies typically invade homes when seeking a dry and sheltered place to hibernate. They do not pose a health hazard since they don’t lay eggs in food or waste.
Cluster flies hibernate in large groups, with hundreds clustering in upstairs rooms, roof spaces, wall cavities, and window sash boxes. In early autumn, they gather on sunny, light-colored exterior walls before finding their way inside through crevices, cracks, around tiles, window frames, or under eaves. Once a site is selected for hibernation, they return to the same location year after year due to genetic memory.
Signs of a cluster fly infestation include dead or sluggish flies around windows or in roof spaces during autumn or warm days in late winter and early spring.
