Asian Hornets (Vespa velutina) are becoming a major concern across the UK, especially in the north. Sightings have been increasing, with confirmed reports in Newcastle in 2023. These invasive species pose a serious threat to native pollinators, particularly honeybees. At PEST-SHIELD, we recognise the urgency of dealing with Asian hornet sightings and take a structured, responsible approach to handling them.
If an insect is confirmed as an Asian hornet, we do not charge for related callouts. Our team works closely with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) and the National Bee Unit to ensure proper handling. This process ensures that nests are safely removed, and samples are taken for genetic analysis to assess potential spread.
Dark thorax and abdomen, with yellow-tipped legs
Around 25mm in length, slightly smaller than European hornets
Often spotted near beehives or around Asian plants like Fatsia japonica
If you think you’ve spotted an Asian hornet, take a clear photograph and report it via the Asian Hornet Watch app (available on Android and iOS). This is the official method in the UK to report sightings, ensuring your information reaches the right authorities.
While PEST-SHIELD does not directly treat Asian hornet nests, we play an important role by: Reporting sightings to the authorities
Educating the public on identification and reporting
Collaborating with environmental bodies to ensure safe nest removal
Asian hornet nests can grow massive, housing up to 10,000 hornets! By the end of the season, each nest can produce up to 300 queens. If left unchecked, these hornets can devastate local ecosystems, particularly honeybee populations.
If you believe you’ve spotted an Asian hornet, contact PEST-SHIELD immediately! We will: Assist in identifying the insect
Ensure the sighting is reported
Help facilitate nest removal – at no cost if the presence is confirmed.
Together, we can protect our environment from this invasive threat!
