Inspection Findings

Without identifying and removing this concealed breeding source, insecticide treatment alone would have been unlikely to provide a permanent solution.

Treatment Carried Out

The infested rodent bait was carefully removed and disposed of before a professional residual insecticide treatment was applied to the surrounding area.

Removing the breeding source ensured that any remaining adult beetles emerging from the area would come into contact with the residual insecticide while preventing future generations from developing within the contaminated bait.

Outcome

Following removal of the historic rodent bait and completion of the residual insecticide treatment, the source of the infestation was eliminated.

The customer was advised to monitor the property over the following weeks while any remaining adult beetles completed their natural life cycle.

No further breeding source remained within the property.

Why This Investigation Was Different

This investigation demonstrates why inspection is often more important than simply treating the insects that can be seen.

Although the customer’s concern centred on the beetles appearing within the kitchen, the true source of the infestation was rodent bait that had been left beneath the kitchen units for several years following a previous pest control treatment.

This case also highlights the importance of removing rodenticide once a treatment programme has been successfully completed. Cereal-based rodent baits are designed to remain attractive to rodents but, if forgotten for long periods, can also become a food source and breeding medium for stored product insects.

Had the bait remained in place, the infestation would likely have continued regardless of how many insecticide treatments were applied.

By identifying and removing the source before treatment, the infestation was resolved at its origin rather than simply controlling the visible beetles.
