Pest Shield attended a public park café in Newcastle NE2 following reports of an active wasp nest attached to the exterior of the building.
Prior to our attendance, members of the public had already been alarmed by the wasps, with one passer-by reportedly being attacked after inadvertently approaching the nest.
Due to the location within a busy public area, the nest presented an immediate risk to visitors and staff, requiring prompt treatment.
Inspection confirmed a large active wasp nest suspended beneath the café roof overhang in an area regularly used by members of the public.
The entrance to the nest was clearly visible, with a high volume of worker wasps continuously entering and leaving. The position of the nest meant pedestrians could unknowingly pass within close proximity, increasing the likelihood of defensive behaviour.
As social wasps become highly protective of established nests, disturbance or accidental proximity can result in multiple wasps responding aggressively to perceived threats.
The location of the nest made prompt treatment essential to reduce the risk of further incidents.
A professional insecticidal treatment was applied directly to the nest before allowing sufficient time for the product to circulate throughout the colony.
Once activity had ceased, the nest was safely removed from the structure and disposed of, eliminating any remaining risk to members of the public using the café and surrounding park.
Following treatment and removal of the nest, wasp activity ceased and the immediate hazard to visitors and café staff was eliminated.
The affected area was returned to normal use without further reports of aggressive wasp activity.
This case highlights the importance of assessing the risk posed by a wasp nest, not simply its size.
Although wasp nests are commonly found on domestic properties, nests located within public spaces require a different approach due to the increased likelihood of people unknowingly entering the wasps’ defensive zone.
In this instance, the nest had already resulted in an attack on a passer-by before Pest Shield attended. Prompt treatment and removal significantly reduced the ongoing risk to the public.
